The Beaufort Memorial Hospital Board of Trustees is appointed by the County Council and makes decisions affecting every member of the community. The Ocean and Coastal Resource Management Authority regulates coastal development. These boards are important and are made up of volunteers. Friends of the Library organizes two used-book sales a year. Habitat for Humanity builds affordable Beaufort real estate for the needy. The League of Women Voters is conducting a comprehensive study of traffic and transportation that will help with future countywide planning. U.S. Power Squadron teaches safe boating and navigational skills. The Beaufort Art Association, representing some 250 artists, has workshops, shows and has opened its own downtown gallery staffed by interested volunteers. Members of the Open Land Trust raise funds to buy land for the public by preparing and serving luncheons in some of Beaufort SC's spectacular homes for visiting tour groups.
